Giving Our Hearts to the Sick and Disabled
When he was on earth, Jesus Christ healed the sick and disabled. He did this with the power that God gave him. It was his way of showing us that he loved them and cared about them.
Though we do not have the power of Jesus to heal we do have the ability to make the sick and disabled feel better in other ways. We have ways to show that we love them. We have ways to show them that they have value.
Everyone knows people that are sick and/or disabled. Some of them are related to us. Some are friends. Some are coworkers. There are those who are in our community.
Some of the people we know are born with illnesses and disabilities. Others may suffer hardships which lead to illness or disabilities. Age does not matter. It affects the young and old.
As for those of us who are healthy when we get older, our bodies betray us. Over time many of us become handicapped in little and big ways. Eventually all of us will need healing power.
All should think of this when we see those who are suffering from illness or suffering from physical disabilities. They need our support. It is up to us to give it to them. As Bill Withers sang in “Lean on Me” let them lean on us when they are not strong. For there will be a time when we need someone to lean on.
There is always a part of us that feels sympathy for those who are sick and handicapped. This is natural. How can you not feel a little sorry for those who cannot take care of themselves? Especially if they are born with a disability or sickness. We feel that they will never experience certain things in life.
But we should not let those feelings get in the way of making them feel good. We should not let them get in the way of making them feel valuable. We should do everything in our power to make their lives comfortable. We should try to include them in conversations. We should try to find things that they can participate in physically. We should treat them as human beings.
We should also try to find out what talents they have. Just because a person may have an illness or disability does not mean they do not possess gifts. The world is full of people with disabilities that do great things. An example is the musician Stevie Wonder. Despite being blind he has had the vision to perform and write music.
The sick and disabled are people too. They have feelings. They have talents. They can inspire us if we let them. God touches them, and he blesses them just as he does us.
God wants us to bless them too. In whatever way we can.
God loves the sick and disabled. He showed this through the healing power of his son Jesus Christ.
And through this healing power, Jesus wanted to show us how to love them as well.
