We Can Learn From Our Children

We can learn from our children. Their innocence is so refreshing. Though there comes a time when we all must become adults and put away childish things, looking at our children growing can bring us joy and remind us not to always take life so seriously.

It is beautiful seeing children laughing and playing together. The smiles on their faces are priceless. The noise that comes from playgrounds and backyards fills the air. It is nice to see how they take turns while playing games.

Then there are the things that they find funny. They can make up a story that tickles them to the bone. When they want to let us in on the joke it is their way of saying that they love us. Their way of sharing their laughter. We may have heard the riddle before, but to them it is new. We laugh because they laugh.

Our children have such vivid imaginations. They can make up things and see visions that adults do not for their minds are not as jaded as ours. They do not have the cares and worries that will be a part of their lives later.

It is so nice to see them author stories that are theirs. To see them draw a picture of themselves or someone that they know. To hear them tell us of what they think their future will be. To hear a view of the world from a child’s perspective. Often, it is more optimistic than an adult’s point of view.

To see our children create is a wonder. Whether it is a stick figure drawing at age five. A finger painting at age seven. A drawing at age ten. A science fair project at age thirteen. Just seeing their work and ideas come to fruition gives us confidence that our future is safe.

There is joy in seeing them learn something new. Joy in seeing their happiness in learning something new. Whether it is to tie a shoelace, ride a bike, roller skate, swim. It is a joy when they learn that they know that they know that they know that they know.

Often, we have the task of picking our children up when they fall. But sometimes they do the same for us. After a hard day they are there with a smile to help us forget our worries. They can make us laugh when we are feeling down. They show us their unconditional love and trust even when others may not.

Our children may not be perfect. But we can learn from watching them.

As we watch them grow, we can remember what we once were.

And what we can become if we walk by faith just as they walk with faith in us.
