Old and New
Sometimes new things and ideas are better than the old ones. At other times, the old things are still best until a new one or better idea comes along.
This may sound confusing. It should. The clash of ideas and beliefs between young and old is often misunderstood by the two. Often, neither side is willing to let go of what they believe or stand for. Middle ground and solutions never happen or come slowly as each side refuses to listen to the other.
We have all heard of the “generation gap.” Simply said it is the difference of opinion between the older and younger generations. This has been going on since the beginning of time. The only way this gap can be closed is if both sides are willing to admit each has something to give to society. The old have wisdom and knowledge gained from experience. The young have ideas that come from youthful energy and a vision of what they think the world can be.
What if the elderly use their knowledge and wisdom to speak less and listen more? What if the young share their ideas and vision with the old without thinking that they know more than their elders?
After listening, what if the old give thought to the visions that the young have and provide them with knowledge and wisdom on how and whether it can succeed? While at the same time not killing the young’s dreams.
After sharing their vision, what if the young look to the old for knowledge and wisdom before going ahead? While at the same time understanding that they do not know it all and some old ways may still be better than their vision.
This may lead to frank discussions that will help both sides reach the best possible outcome.
No new vision has ever been fulfilled without people young and old believing in it. That belief can only come when people listen and talk about an idea or vision then think about it with an open mind. When the old say, “Maybe there is a better way.” When the young say, “Maybe if I listen to those before me, I might learn something.”
The generation gap closes when knowledge is passed from generation to generation. Then the older generation allows the younger generation to use that knowledge in hopes of bringing new ideas to light. Once these new ideas are discussed and compared to what is already in place it can be decided which is better. Sticking with the old or implementing the new.
Some things stand the test of time. Others do not.
It is our responsibility to figure out what is the best choice between old and new. Old and young together.
It can be done.
